APIW Memorial Scholarships

Giving back to the industry

Each year since 1987, APIW has awarded scholarships to worthy students at The College of Insurance, now St. John’s University, the School of Risk Management. In the latter years, these were given under the name “Lana James Memorial Scholarship,” in honor of a dedicated APIW volunteer and Board Member who died prematurely in 1992. Additional scholarships were also given on behalf of our Chicago Network to the Katie Insurance School of Illinois.

The tragic events of September 11th brought about our desire to create a symbolic and encompassing remembrance. We wished to honor all those within the APIW family who were lost that day and remember those members who have lost their lives prematurely.

In their memory, APIW’s scholarships are now given under the name “APIW Memorial Scholarship” at St. John’s University and the “APIW Lana James Memorial Scholarship” at the Katie School of Insurance.

Jennie Fortune

Jennie Fortune is a first semester senior at St. John’s University and graduating in January. Intrigued by the idea that she could combine her mathematical skills with her desire to find a career that gives her purpose, she decided to pursue a major in Risk Management and Insurance. She has taken a full load of risk and insurance related courses while maintaining a 3.84 GPA.

Jennie is a member of the National Honor Society of Leadership and Success and is currently an Associate Board member of Gamma Iota Sigma, where she collaborates with the Executive Board as well as fellow members of the Associate Board to coordinate events. Jennie was selected as a candidate to participate in the Risk Management Global Destination Course at St. John’s to visit and shadow different insurance and brokerage companies abroad. She is also a member of the Risk and Insurance Management Society and attended the RIMS 2018 conference.

Last summer, she interned at Risk Management International, Ltd. where she had the opportunity to speak and negotiate with brokers regarding renewals and rates. She assisted in putting together premium comparisons, loss summaries, reviewed policies and coverages, and gained exposures to different lines of business, such as General Liability, Property, Umbrella Liability, Excess/Surplus lines, Crime and Cyber Liability. This summer, Jennie will be participating in the Marsh Summer Trac Program where she intends to further develop and extend her knowledge of the industry

Hannah Crawley

Hannah Crawley will be a senior at the Katie School of Insurance and Risk Management at Illinois State University majoring in Insurance/ Risk Management and Finance with a 3.27 GPA. She has interned at COUNTRY Financial as an Underwriting Intern during the school year, and she will be at SCOR Re in Chicago as an Underwriting Intern this summer. She has two parts of the CPCU professional designation, and she is continuing her goal of completing the eight exams. During this past year, Hannah attended the Troy University E&S Symposium and the Profit & Cash workshop on campus. In the upcoming academic year, Hannah will be the Director of Professional Development for the Gamma Iota Sigma chapter at the Katie School, and she is currently Director of Corporate Relations and Pledge Event Activity Coordinator for Phi Gamma Nu. She has been an organizer and volunteer for the Baby Fold Tree Festival, the Midwest Food Drive and the Autism Awareness 5K.
